Small is Beautiful Part Three

Just to show how quickly things change, I need, first of all, to update you about one of last week's programs.

Ryan Martinson, the author of Close Popup, has released a new version. I mentioned that it would be nice if this utility opened and closed with the browser. This now happens and makes it even more useful. You can get the new release from his home page.

Tool Box
Temp Free. Author: Popcorn Software.

Whilst I have the tool box open here's another cleaning utility that I added to my "I Use Them" category some time ago. I wouldn't want you to miss it.

Emptying your recycle bin at regular intervals? Good for you... but what about the Windows / temp folder? This bottomless pit can soak up hard drive space like you wouldn't believe! Yes, you can find your way there and clear it out, but this little utility will do it for you...safely. If a temp file is being used by a program that's running, it's left alone.

A single screen tells you all you need to know. Just hit the SCAN button, follow the instructions and cross off another housekeeping chore from your list. Can't ask for better than that!

Tool Box
Unfrag. Author: Ziff Davis.

Seeing that there's only one item left in the tool box I may as well empty it out for the time being. It will soon fill up again!

De-fragmenting your hard drive at regular intervals is the best thing you can do to keep your system healthy. It's also the best way to keep the most space available. Unfrag serves an almost identical function with one particular type of file called Compound files. If you use Microsoft Word as much as I do, you collect a lot of these files.

The Help file with this program gives a lot more details, although some of it is jargon! As is suggested, leave the Named field blank, and put a check in the include subfolders box. The whole drive(s) will then be scanned for these files.

I was very impressed by the amount of space I recovered the first time I ran it. Now it's on my list of regular chores.

I have just received a very nice e-mail from Freeware Forever. This is a new one for me but my first impression is that it's good looking and very comprehensive.
