Small is Beautiful: Part one

I do believe order is emerging from chaos! My boxes are now all neatly lined up before me and all I need is a scientific method of establishing which gets opened first. How does that one go?... eeny meeny miney mo, or is it?... one potato... two potato... Hmm decisions, decisions. Oh well, my wife Dee just made a "suggestion"...

Makeup Case
So first of all cosmetics... hey, when you consider how many options Microsoft has provided for "personalizing" the appearance of Windows...why not?

Transparent : Author - Jay Guerette:
Transparent allows you to change the look of the text labels under each icon on the desktop. Various color options are offered and the one you choose can be linked to the Startup folder. This ensures your desk top loads the way you want it. The best way to understand the effect of this program is to visit the home page where before and after illustrations are shown. Also the options are explained in detail.

Nothing here that will change the world, but I've been running it for some time now with no problems whatsoever. The author has been updating this program quite regularly, so keep an eye open for new versions.

Tool Box
You will find me opening up this box quite frequently... it's my favourite. To compensate for a lot of the bloatware out there here's another neat little gadget that's very useful.

Smart Cleaner: Author - Alliance Software :
This one checks your hard drive for old, redundant and useless files and deletes them. I've been using it for ages now. There's no home page and I remember being a bit nervous when I went to use it because it looked a bit wacky. If you download it you'll see what I mean.

I soon realised this is just the author's sense of humour. Provided you take their advice and make sure nothing else is running, particularly your browser, it is perfectly safe and very reliable. It is very simple to use, certainly compared to the big utility programs. I always tell it to look for all the file types it covers and then when I say "yes, delete them," it tells me it has killed everything it found.

As I say it works for me and cleans out a lot of junk from a lot of places. The current version includes both an install and uninstall routine. Since I can't point you to a web site this button will take you to ZD Net's page where you can read their description and download the program.
