Freelance writing opportunities abound on the Internet. Depending upon the path taken, there are sites where you can place bids for specific projects and there are more open forums where articles of a specific type are open for submission. Personally, I have stuck with the open forum route simply because unless I am under deadline, I find it nearly impossible to write about a specific topic with specific guidelines. Maybe this is one of the reasons I am not a professional writer; my writing lacks direction and much like a puppy learning to pee outside, must be placed back in the same spot numerous times and reminded what needs to be done.
For the writer who can stay on target, writing about a specific topic for a specific audience, my favorite site is http://www.elance.com. This is a high quality freelance site with many added features such as your own Elance account that can be funded with your credit card or checking account and operates much the same as a PayPal.com account. It is necessary to become a registered service provider at Elance and subsequently pay at least the minimum monthly fee of $25, listing you as a Basic Service Provider. You are then allowed to bid on all basic projects in all categories. The other level of projects is known as the Select Project Marketplace. To bid on these projects, you must pay additional fees, as listed below:
Select Subscription Bundles Month Qtr. Year Web Design & Development $150 $405 $1350 Software & Technology $150 $405 $1350 Graphic Design $100 $270 $1080 Business Strategy $100 $270 $900 Writing & Translation $40 $108 $360 Administrative Support $40 $108 $360 Legal $40 $108 $360 Accounting & Finance $40 $108 $360
Even with the fees Elance charges it's freelancers, it is still a worthwhile investment. The majority of the projects posted are awarded, which is often not the case at other sites of this type.
Next, I will list various freelance writing sites and my review of the information listed. While I haven't received any jobs from these sites, I am rating them based on a comparison to other sites of the same type.
