Charles de Gaulle, part the first.


year, and in 1944, after epic and heroic battles by American, British, Canadian, Free French, the Résistance and other allied forces across France, de Gaulle returns triumphant to Paris. De Gaulle believes this is his chance to profoundly change the structure of the French State. His desire to redesign the French republic is soon defeated, traditional IIIrd republic politics soon takes over. De Gaulle is elected head of state on November 13th 1945 of the provisional government, however the French communists try wrestle away influence from de Gaulle. During the subsequent crisis, de Gaulle is soon pushed out of the limelight by rival political factions and resigns in early 1946.

The fourth Republic is born on October 13th 1946, Vincent Auriol is elected president of the Republic. De Gaulle begins a long quiet retreat ... until the crisis of 1958.
