E. F. Schumaker Society, third in a ten-part series on Global Constructs

Jul 31, 2004 - © Donna L. Quesinberry

There are, in answer to this awakening of a new global spirit, constructs for social, economic, governmental, health, and safety. These global constructs are similar of nature in that they propose to assist individuals at all levels of their livelihood(s) (i.e.: for the most part) and they strive to assist humanity along with the resident geosphere simultaneously. This article is a continuance of this ten-part series. One article is dedicated to each globalization effort listed below that encompass new organizational efforts in globalization of the world community.

It is my hope discussion regarding these concepts of the world community will ensue. That we will share our thoughts and opinions. That we will learn from one another as we review these articles in this series. Additionally, if there are global constructs (i.e.: not touched upon) and you would like to share them, please feel free to contact me at D. Quesinberry at DonnaInk.com. I will happily research and add additional global constructs to this article series.

E.F. Schumacher Society-

The E. F. Schumacher Society, named after the author of Small Is Beautiful: Economics As If People Mattered, is an educational non-profit organization founded in 1980. Their programs demonstrate that both social and environmental sustainability can be achieved by applying the values of human-scale communities and respect for the natural environment to economic issues.

E. F. Schumacher Society President Robert Swann has promoted local currency since 1972. He worked issuing Constants (tied in value to a basket of commodities that were circulated in shops in Exeter New Hampshire for over a year). From this successful issuance of alternative currency the climate for the decentralized scrip issuance developed. In the 1980s a discussion group was hosted through the mail on local currencies and later Tom Greco authored, New Money for Healthy Communities ($19, c/o author P. O. Box 42663, Tucson, AZ 85733 CIRC@AZSTARNET.COM). Tom Greco was a part of the discussion hosted through the mail and Robert Swann was as well.
