I'm reading a book: Wanna tag along?I bought a bunch of books on Ebay awhile back and eventually had such a pile (and a bunch of dirty looks from my husband) that I had to stuff them away for future reading. Well… I’m only taking two classes this semester and since I am getting rather bored I decided to make my way through the masses and find a book to read. Now of course I just got done with She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb (of which is a fiction book – something I never read) so I felt I really should tackle a non-fiction book. I decided to read Gender and Psychology edited by Karen Trew and John Kremer. Now, when thinking about psychology, name some of the most common people in the discipline. When I think about that I come up with Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, Erik Ericksen, Carl Rogers… the list could go on and on. However, when looking at these names do you see a pattern begin to emerge? I was upset when I saw that I had thought up only males as well. I do know one female off the top of my head, but she came up after I continued reading… Virginia Satir. Okay, so males dominate the discipline. We’ve known that for years and years. Gender and Psychology aims to shed some light concerning gender issues and current research, the theoretical perspectives of gender psychology, and the future developments that could come about. The book was written by a small group of European scholars and contains much useful information as well as exercises, discussion topics, and more. Each Wednesday I will be presenting a new article on a chapter of the book and share with you my findings. There are many chapters in the book including Identity and the Self, Feminism, Biology, Emotion, Childhood, Education, Work, Old Age, Psychopathology, and much more. I hope to learn along with you and well as create deep discussions for all of us to participate in.
