A Cultural View of Self-Presentation, Part IThe explanation for the divergence may lie in the structure of the different societies. While interdependence can be found in Western societies, these are considered to be mainly individualistic societies. A person here is defined by what they do and who they are. However, many cultures, particularly in the east have collective societies where interdependence is the rule. Who you are is determined by what group you belong to and what it has accomplished. The general goal then is not to get ahead but to do what is best for the group as a whole. Next Time: Self-presentation in the US and Japan.
