David Coulthard was first, M. Schumacher was second, with Heinz-Herald Frentzen in third and Nick Heidfield in fourth position at the ending stages of the race. Unfortunately, Heinz-Herald Frentzen suffered a failure in his car mechanics and had to pull off the track with just half a dozen laps to go. This put Nick Heidfield in third position. Meanwhile Oliver Panis in BAR Honda showed great class and overtook Jarno Trulli in the Jordan to secure fourth position. This put Trulli into fifth and Fisichella into sixth place. This sequence remained the same till the end of the race. David Coulthard thus had his first win in 10 Grand Prix races. M. Schumacher got six points for his second place thus keeping him still in the lead in Championship points. Nick Heidfield was delighted to share the podium with Coulthard and Schumacher. Only 10 drivers completed the race which was disappointing for the teams and signalled that they had much work to do.

This race saw the emergence of Mclaren back into contention for the season's championship. Their car seemed to live up to the expectations in both wet and dry conditions. Also BMW shot up to expectations to give Mclaren a run for the second position. Even Sauber Petronas, Jordan and BAR Honda have secured valuable points at the start of the season. The season, thus, seems nicely poised with drivers from Ferrari, Mclaren and Williams BMW all showing great class and competetive spirit. This season promises to be more interesting and and thrilling unlike last year where just Ferrari and Mclaren were fighting for the Championship, with other teams behind by almost 100 points.
