Greed

Training camps are in full swing and once again there are several holdouts and threats to holdout.

Now I can understand the draftees looking for the best contract possible, in fact it's smart to get yours going in rather than throw hissy fits after one season of a long contract.

What really gets under my skin are the guys that want new contracts or want to dictate terms for extensions when they are still under contract. To me it seems dishonest. They signed a contract to play for a set price, they give their word. Then they have a good season and get their names in the paper and all of the sudden they are worth fifty million dollars.

These guys like Terrell Owens who agreed to a contract then get a big head because they have a great season really make me mad. After all, every team signs every player with the expectation of record breaking play. So in reality these greedy players are doing what they are paid to do anyway. I've never heard of a team signing a player and telling a player, "this is only enough to cover a mediocre season so don't go crazy with the stats."

Do what you agree to do and accept the pay you agreed to take! It's that simple. Like my Dad used to tell me "no matter how good you get there will always be someone better." If I was the general manager of a football team and I had a guys with years left on his contract threatening a holdout I'd bench him for the season, regardless of how good he is. This I'm worth more mentality is contagious, if you give in to one player the flood gate opens and half the team is demanding a raise.

If these teams start benching the holdouts and refusing to trade them it'll send a clear message to the players union. After all, when it does come time for contract talks it's all about the stats and "what have you done for me lately" If the player has been sitting and has no stats he's crippled at the negotiating table.

So all you football fans out there think about this, these guys want to raise your ticket prices because they think they are the best thing to grace the field. I suggest you boo these players with enthusiasm when they walk on to the field, let them know how you feel about their greed and lack of honor.
