DESCRIPTION: An important flat-racing event of the late season on the course owned by the Sovereign, which offers £1 million in prize money. Do not miss the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, won in recent years by Observatory, Dubai Millennium and Mark of Esteem. The course also offers family entertainments and carnival rides, making this a family outing.

GETTING THERE: Ascot is 45 miles from London and can be approached from the M4 via A332 (Junction 6), or the M3 via A332 (Junction 3). Trains arrive from London Waterloo.
DRESS: While this is less formal than Royal Ascot, you are nonetheless advised to dress smartly (lounge suits for men, dresses for ladies). This is a family occasion, and you will see children well turned out.

Golf: The Ryder Cup

DESCRIPTION: A biennial five-day tournament that brings together the best golfers from Europe and the US in competition. The event alternates between the US and Britain, but when held in Britain, as in 2002, it attracts individuals of some distinction, who come to enjoy the social networking as much as the golf. The event, first held in 1927, attracts celebrities, and the Duke of York, who does much to promote British golf and golfing products overseas, is a particular fan.
