Part 1. The Royal MonthThe Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are resident at Buckingham Palace from where they will continue their Golden Jubilee Tour of Britain. They are scheduled to visit places and events in Birmingham and elsewhere in the Midlands; Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and other parts of Yorkshire; South London; East Anglia and the East. Royal garden parties have been a July fixture at Buckingham Palace since Queen Victoria's reign. This year The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will host garden parties at Buckingham Palace on 9th, 16th and 30th July and at Sandringham House on 18th July. This year invitations have also gone to those born on the day of The Queen's Accession 6 February, 1952; those born since The Queen's 1977 Silver Jubilee, and representatives of the many charities of which Her Majesty and His Royal Highness are patron. A colourful event takes place in the Buckingham Palace gardens on 5th July as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations when we see a parade for all Her Majesty's bodyguards and the in-pensioners of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. A highlight of the Royal month will be the opening of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester by The Queen on 25th July. Other members of the Royal Family including the Princess Royal, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will attend the Games on various days. Members of the Royal Family are active this month attending functions thoughout Britain as patrons and presidents of various national and regional charities, sporting events and agricultural shows. The Princess Royal, Patron, pays her annual visits to Scottish Lighthouses this month. The Duke of York is busy in Yorkshire. The Duke of Kent, President, attends the Ladies' and Men's Finals of the lawn tennis championships at Wimbledon. The Earl and Countess of Wessex visit Swaziland and Kenya this year on behalf of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. Swan Upping, the annual census of the swan population by David Barber, The Queen's Swan Marker, takes place this year during July on certain stretches of the Thames between 15th and 19th July. July is the height of the polo season and we can expect to see the Prince of Wales on the field with his sons Princes William and Harry playing in a number of charity matches. The Henley Royal Regatta takes place 3 - 7 July at Henley-on-Thames.
