Now the showcase for music and musicians of every conceivable background and attracting top chart acts, the Festival still retains its virile iconaclism despite the veneer of respectability age has brought with it. The Royal Cornwall Show

VENUE: The Royal Cornwall Showground, Wadebridge, Cornwall PL27 7JE
WHAT IT IS: The Royal Cornwall, which goes back to 1793, is the West Country's major agricultural fair, which also serves as a trade show, a family event and a place to spot Royalty and the nobility. The event's Patron, the Queen, has been known to visit the show on the opening day, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh. The Duke of Gloucester is also a visitor. Past highlights have included performances by the Band of the Royal Corps of Signals, the Royal Artillery Parachute Team, and top show-jumpers.

GETTING THERE: The showground is 1.5 miles west of Wadebridge, North Cornwall, on the A39, and is signposted from main routes. Car parking is free. Bodmin Parkway is the nearest train station, and Newquay the nearest airport.

Rick Stein, the world renowned TV chef and writer on seafood cuisine, has brought fame to Padstow, the picturesque North Cornwall fishing village about 10 miles from the showground. Above his waterfront Seafood Restaurant are 13 en-suite rooms overlooking the breathtaking Camel estuary. The restaurant has a worldwide reputation. From about £90 per double room with breakfast.
