Princess Margaret Dies; World Tributes

Princess Margaret. BBCeBBC
to mind the example she has set for all of us of subordinating personal agenda to the call of duty. May her ardent and generous spirit find that peace in death towards which Her Royal Highness ranged, elusively, in life.

In England BBC TV cancelled its scheduled evening programmes in order to show a warm tribute to the late Princess. Leaning heavily on archive film it showed interviews with a number of friends including Group Captain Peter Townsend whom she gave up thoughts of marrying because of his position as a divorcee. Flags flew at half mastat the Royal residences and thoughout the country.

All the British Sunday tabloids devoted their front pages to a full page photo of Princess Margaret in her days of radiant beauty and carried 12 page or more picture supplements chronicling the story of her life. Typical banner headlines were: "The Tragic Princess",(Sunday People); "Margaret loved life and lived it to the full",(Mail on Sunday); "Her final hours",(Sunday Express); and the charming accolade of the Scottish Sunday Post "Margaret the perfect Royal Mother".
