13-27 October at Stow-in-the-Wold, Moreton-in-the-Marsh, Chipping Norton and other towns and villages in the Cotswolds. The 4th annual two week festival of shows, private views and lectures mounted by the 40 plus members of the increasingly important Cotswolds Antique Dealers Association.

Image and Idol

Tate Britain, Millbank, London, SW1. Hidden treasures from our medieval past. A small but astonishing collection of medieval sculpture rescued from the destructive iconoclasm of England's Reformation, when 1000 years of art was wantonly smashed in the cathedrals, abbeys and churches throughout England and Wales. Shown in the two central Duveen Galleries as part of the Tate's definitive permanent exhibition of British Art.

Rembrandt's Women

Royal Academy, Burlington House, Piccadilly, London W1. A wonderful collection of drawings, etchings and paintings by Rembrandt of his wife Saskia and his mistress Hendrickje Stoffels. An unrepeatable opportunity to see some of the artist's most beautiful works under one roof. Until 16 December.

The Golden Age of British Watercolours

Dulwich Picture Gallery, London SE21. A remarkable, and perhaps the finest, private collection of British watercolours on loan for the first time since1948. Includes 21 Turners and 20 Cotmans in pristine luminescent condition unspoiled by light deterioration. Until 6 January, 2002.

Painted Ladies

National Portrait Gallery, St.Martin's Place, London, WC2. From 11 October. A sumptuous collection of portraits of women of the Court of Charles II, the Merry Monarch. A serious examination and reevaluation of Restoration portraiture by Lely and others. Loans from various stately homes including Althorp, the seat of the Earls Spencer.
