Champagne and strawberries at the Henley Regatta

This is Pimm's, or champagne and strawberries time in England's social calender. Prodigious quantities are consumed each year at the Henley Regatta on the Champagne Lawn or at the Fawley Bar. I have been told that that half the Pimm's produced each year is drunk at Henley. I can believe this and I have certainly helped to maintain this statistic in my times at Henley. If you have not enjoyed a Pimm's before, try one this summer on a warm evening. Here is my own recipe:

Pimm's No 1.
1 part gin. 3 parts Pimm's. 6 parts ice cold Canada Dry Ginger Ale, (or Lemonade if you prefer). Slice of apple, orange, lemon and (ESSENTIAL ingredient X) slice of cucumber with rind. Sprigs of mint and/or borage from the garden. Ice.

Travelsleuth's Travel Tips
I found charming bed & breakfast accommodation at Woodpecker Cottage in the hamlet of Warren Row, just outside Henley. The cottage is set in a bluebell wood, has a large garden and croquet lawn and is a haven of peace in the English countryside. There is an excellent choice of restaurants and country pubs in this Thames valley area. Homemade bread and jams together with eggs from the house chickens are offered at breakfast. Ground floor double room en-suite about $80 for two people. Recommended.
Address: Michael and Joana Power, Woodpecker cottage, Warren Row, Nr. Maidenhead, RG10 8QS. Tel: (01628) 822772. Fax: 01628 822125.
