London in June -Wimbledon and Antiques

Game, Set, and Match! Wimbledon Fever.

Its THAT time of year again! From 21st June until 4th July, the our eyes will be glued to the television screen to watch the most exciting international tennis event of the year, the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships in London.

I confess to having minimal interest in sport of any kind. For a long time, (I am not making this up), I thought that sports gear with the name Jordan on it was promoting travel to a small desert Kingdom in the Levant east of Jerusalem and north of Ancient Egypt and the Nile.

For 50 weeks in the year the sports section of my local newspaper remains unopened. But all that changes for just two weeks at the end of June - England's Wimbledon Fortnight in south London.

The atmosphere at Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club is unique; emerald green tennis courts, The Royal Box graced by the Duke and Duchess of Kent, Patrons of the Tournament, the polite and decorously clad spectators at the famed Center Court, the ritual guzzling of champagne and fresh strawberries, the inevitable breaks in play caused by passing rainstorms.

And of course there are the Players, for whom the Wimbledon Finals are the the ultimate dream, the pinnacle to aspire to. Some dominate the Wimbledon Courts for a decade or so before age and injury take their toll. Others will appear as young prodigies in their early teens, only to burn out like a shooting star. Yet others fade gracefully away to rise phoenix like once again. Will Steffie Graf be this year's phoenix? Memories of Champions Past linger ghostlike on the center Court.

Steve Furcal's International Tennis Tours offers a superb Wimbledon package for the tennis buff. It includes best seats at the Center Court for up to four days, round trip air to London, hotel in central London, daily transfers to the Championships, and interesting extras like tickets to a theater and Madame Tussauds.

Spectacular Antiques and glittering Galas
London hosts a number of important international Antiques Fairs during the height of the summer's social season. The Olympia Fine Art and Antiques Fair from 3rd - 13th June will attract collectors from around the world to the Grand Hall where over 400 dealers are exhibiting. At the same time in Olympia Hall 2 some 150 specialist dealers are showing rare books and manuscripts at the annual Antiquarian Book Fair.
