My St. Patrick's Day Dinner in Kilkenny

layer of pie crust before baking by brushing it with beaten egg. The glossy end-result is visually so satisfying.

"What", you are going to ask, "am I to do with a well-filled glass of Irish whiskey?"...DRINK IT, dear Reader, DRINK IT while you prepare the pie! That's what is known in my kitchen as "Cook's Perks".

If you are looking for interesting Irish recipes on the internet take a page out of my kitchen cookery book and subscribe to the free Irish Food.com recipe service.

Having sampled the delights of Irish Whiskeys, you will doubtless wish to discover the their history. Dip into Malachy Magee's book Irish Whiskey. Believe me, it is an Irish story of intrigue, violent skullduggery, passion and duplicity. It is written with verve by a fine gentleman who has obviously put many worthy hours of liquid research into his writing labours. While reading this tale of trickery you will need to fortify yourself with a warming glass of that uisce beatha, "water of life" as you turn the pages. And if you know where I can put my hands on a bottle of 12 year old Redbreast send me a postcard. Or better still, just mail me a bottle!

Slainte!

Travelsleuth's Travel Tips

How to get there
From Dublin: Take the N7 southwest out of the city. Turn onto the M9/N9 at Ballymore and N10 at Paulstown.
From Rosslare sea ferry terminal: Take the N25 into Waterford and the N24 out of the town direction Limerick. This connects almost immediately with the N9 driving north to Kilkenny. If you are feeling adventurous with your partner's map reading there are some interesting country road short cuts off the N25 which cut out Waterford. But don't blame me if you get lost on a road meandering up the side of the River Barrow instead of the one hugging the River Nore as I did!
