Edinburgh's International Festival of Arts celebrates its 55th spectacular year and details of performances are now available. Let us put behind us the the traumas of that have assailed Britain through winter and spring and prepare to feast our eyes and senses on a superb programme of music, theatre, dance and the Edinburgh Castle Tattoo. The UK's foremost Festival of performing arts under the patronage of The Queen has dominated the European and British Festival calender and Scotland's social season since its inception in 1947. Edinburgh in August offers visitors from all over the world a wide variety of choice in the performing arts covering every aspect of theatre, music, cabaret, comedy, film and literature in over 30 venues ranging from the Festival Theatre and the National Gallery of Scotland to the streets.

This year's the Festival, run from 12th August to 1st September, presents over 160 performances of 121 productions and features 4 world and 20 British premieres. International performers include The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. The Vienna Brugtheater, dancer, Mikhail Baryshnikov, New York City Ballet, Alfred Brendel, Donald Runnicles and Andras Schiff.

At the launch of the Festival programme, the Festival Director, Brian McMaster stressed the vital underlying aims which he hoped to achieve in the selection of performances:
" The festival celebrates new experiences " said Festival Director Brian McMaster at the recent programme launch, " whether through new or rarely performed works, exciting new artists or innovative styles of working. This year`s programme offers an opportunity to experience some of the world`s best artists. It reflects the increasingly diverse sources of inspiration and the blurred distinctions between art forms."

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Donald Runniclesl opens the Festival at Asher Hall with Berlioz` Les Troyans, soloists are Lorraine Hunt Lieberson and John Mark Ainsley. The Festival closes with Wagner`s Die Walkure, performed by Scottish Opera. Last night includes of course the annual spectacular firework display from Castle Rock accompanied by a concert of Barber, Bernstein and Copland in the gardens below.

International theatre includes Irish dramatist Tom Murphy's Too Late for Logic, a philosophical view of marriage;. John Cage`s "surreal" play about the meeting of three characters: Duchamp, Joyce and Satie; Scottish writer Shan Khan's award winning play Office and Chekhov`s The Seagull, performed in German, by the Burgtheater, Vienna. The New York City Ballet dances three programmes of work hitherto unseen outside New York. Mozart lovers can enjoy performances of Cosi Fan Tutte and The Magic Flute and Andras Schiff returns again to give late night Bach piano concertos.
