Gifts in a Jar

© Angelica R. Van Norman

Thinking of giving gifts from the kitchen this holiday season, but don't have the time to cook or bake?

Mixes in a jar - from soups to cookies and seasonings - are the perfect answer. Simply layer the dry ingredients from your choice of numerous recipes into glass jars, and then attach the directions to complete the recipe to the outside of the jar. The recipient can enjoy the gift at their leisure by following the attached directions, and will have you to thank!

Jar Gift Tips:

1. Layer the ingredients by alternating colors and textures, creating a "Sand Art" look.
2. Use wide mouth canning jars for easy access in layering.
3. Attach the recipe directions to the jar using adhesive labels. This makes the directions less likely to loose.
4. Secure the jars with canning seals and lids to ensure freshness.

After you've finished filling your jar with the ingredients, it's time to decorate the jars to add that exciting gift appeal.

Use stickers or rub-ons, or paint a special design to the outside of the jar. Cut seasonal fabric into a circle, which is twice the diameter of the lid, with pinking shears, and place over the seal before tightening the lid. If you chose one-part lids, secure the fabric with a rubber band around the neck of the jar. You can also add scoops or spoons to the outside of the jar for mixing or measuring.

Mixes in a jar are easy gifts that have recipients raving. Impress your family or friends with your creativity, or have a perfect gift for that hard-to-buy-for person.

Have fun!
