Food and wine pairing is a hot topic. Certainly the right wine can enhance a great meal or make a mediocre dish shine. But what are the basics and how is a person with little knowledge on the subject going to gain some basic knowledge so they are ready to make a good choice at the next dinner party or restaurant outing? Luckily there are lots of resources online to get you started. A little reading and studying before a big date can make you appear to be a true wine aficionado! Wineanswers.com> is a great place to start. They have three ways to get information quick. You can search for a keyword (say "pork") or look for information by category (say Wine and Food) or send in a question directly to their expert for advice specifically directed to your question. Food&Wine.com has a very cool interactive search to help you pair wines with all sorts of foods. It works by letting you choose a broad category and then you choose a sub section which narrows the choices even further. When you get to the specifics of your meal, you get a list of specific wines with loads of information on each including price and rating. It's a fun place to play. My favorite way to choose fabulous wines at just about any restaurant is to ask the staff for help. At smaller restaurants the waiter, manager or owner should be able to help you make a choice. Many fine restaurants have a sommelier on staff who is there just waiting to help. To some this may seem like dodging the decision. I disagree. In most cases the sommelier has helped create the wine list and is very familiar with the foods on the menu. He/she is much better equipped to make a good choice than just about any customer (even better than those who consider themselves wine experts!) Don't be
