Jell-O Cake and Fancy Decor

Jell-O Cake

Q.Dear Cvixen, I'm looking for a cake that involves Jell-O being poured over the top of a white or yellow cake. I checked the archives (of this group? or the recipes one?) and too many web pages to believe, and I found a recipes that use Jell-O in the batter. However, my fiancé, (who wants the cake) INSISTS that the liquid Jell-O is poured over the top of a finished cake. My mother says she's heard of it, and thought it was called "stripe it rich cake", but as we've never been a family for Jell-O (or cake), that's all we know. Any ideas? I suppose I could bake a cake and pour Jell-O over it, but if it's really gross, I'd be mad I spent the time baking a cake in the hot summer weather!

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Jennifer

A.Jennifer, The cake you are referring to is made by making a yellow or white cake, poking holes in it with your fingers in a regular pattern and then pouring unset Jell-O over the cake. The Jell-O should be cooled and thick. Make sure the cake has been cooled to at least room temp. If the cake or the Jello-O is too hot, the Jell-O won't stay in the holes. After you pour the Jell-O, chill the cake well to set the Jell-O. After you chill it well, you can frost it.

Here's a link to a recipe I found. It's for a two-layer holiday cake, but you can use the technique to make an easy sheet cake as well: http://www.kraftfoods.com/cgi-bin/recipe...

Fancy Garnish

Q.Dear Cvixen, Do you know the name of the thing you put on the end of turkey legs or lamb chops? It looks like a mini chefs hat. I would most appreciate a reply.

Thanks, Jami

A.Jami, They are called frills. They are usually made of paper, but I've seen plastic ones too.

High-end grocers often sell them or you might try a restaurant supply store.
