Before leaving on even the shortest trip I feel compelled to search the web for information. Sometimes its an in-depth research project and other times a simple sweep. I've found the web to be an incomparable resource for finding out about food and restaurants all over the world. Newsgroups are a good source as well.

Searching blindly will give you mixed results depending on your keyword savvy. It's a sloppy way to go if you are looking for precise information. But, if you like to skip around and see what's out there, which is often the way I start, it's loads of fun. Do remember to use at least three or four words. Such as: Restaurant, Phoenix, Reviews. If you want more than reviews (say directions on how to get there) add the word Map. Using this simple guideline, I usually turn up something approximating what I want.

These sites offer loads of links to explore:

City.net, World City Guide and their ilk are a great starting point. But these sites list mostly the large and overly popular restaurants in any given city.

Yahoo's list of regional reviews and list of Restaurant Directories offer huge lists of other sites with lists. Worth wading through.

Glenffidich's Guide of Guides - you've got to see this! It opens a second small window with a scrollable globe. Pick you location and it'll show you the web sites! It doesn't cover every small town, but for large cities it's a very cool site!

Epicurious offers their opinion of the top spots in several cities worldwide.

But if your destination is off the beaten path what is there to do? Rec.food.restauraunts is the answer. You'll find helpful people from all over the world willing to share their opinions on restaurants all over the world in every city big to small. I've often received loads of advice after posting one simple question. Always helpful and offered in good taste.

Arriving at your destination with a list of food spots in hand gives one a big advantage. For those who enjoy good food wasting time at chain, franchise or just terrible restaurants would be a shame. After searching and reading you have a great chance of finding a fabulous meal on any trip.

Enjoy!
