Be afraid but do it anywayIt is a good motto for any of us who are thinking about something we would love to do but of which we are afraid. Maybe you would like to enroll in university but you're afraid the work will be hard and you're not smart enough to do it. Maybe you'd like to go for that promotion at work but you're afraid you won't be able to handle the added responsibility. Maybe you'd like to exhibit your paintings but you're afraid people won't like them or will criticize them. Maybe you, too, would like to enter the wacky world of stand up comedy, but you're certain you can never overcome your fear of being alone on that stage. Unfortunately, there is no way around fear in these situations. You can feel it, like Roseanne did, and carry it with you on stage or whatever scary place appeals to you, but don't let it stop you. Franklin D. Roosevelt said it best: "There's nothing to fear but fear itself." FOOTNOTES Want to read some more about stand ups? Check out UK website Chortle. Scroll down the left side column and look for the index of comics. The sheer variety of acts is truly impressive.
