Meet a "Passion Follower": Interview With Author Amy Marquis

This is the first of what I hope will be a regular feature - interviews with "Passion Followers", people who follow their hearts and pursue their dreams whatever they may be.

Today's Passion Follower is Amy Marquis. Amy is a published author and editor of Weather here at Suite101.com. Amy talks about her passion for writing, the challenges of pursuing writing as a career, and the recent publication of How to Break into Meteorology co-authored with her husband, Colin Marquis.

Follow Your Passion: First to the exciting news - congratulations on the publication of your book! Tell us about it.

Amy Marquis: Thanks! I'm very excited about the new book. It's part of the Dream Jobs To Go series, which offers step-by-step guides to getting on the path to your dream job. There are lots of titles to choose from, but How To Break Into Meteorology is the title I put together. I talked to real, experienced meteorologists who offer great advice. Plus, I outline a game plan that makes it easy to make your way toward becoming a meteorologist yourself. And for those who might not want to go full force into the science, I offer alternative ways of getting involved. The thing I really tried to get across was all the different opportunities there are in the field of meteorology. If you don't want to be on TV, there are plenty of other ways to go.

FYP: Can you tell us a little bit about your background?

AM: I've been writing professionally since 1994. I started out in local television writing commercials and have made my way into business writing over the years. I've worked with The Weather Channel, Turner Broadcasting and W Hotels, just to name a few. If you'd like to read some of my work, I have a Web site with tons of writing samples.

FYP: Have you always wanted to be a writer? When did you decide to pursue writing as a career?

AM: I have not always wanted to be a professional writer, although I've always enjoyed writing. My background is actually in television. I was a video producer for six years before I found writing. It wasn't until I started working for weather.com, where I was required to write on a daily basis, that I discovered how much I enjoyed it. I'd get started on an assignment and the next thing I knew, the day would be half over! That's when I knew I wanted to write full-time.
