"...in the semblance of a snow-white rose, there was displayed to me the saintly throng, just like a swarm of bees, which at one time alight upon the flowers, and then again return to where their savoury toil is stored. Their countenances were of living flame; their wings of finest gold; the rest of them was whiter than the whiteness of snow..." (Dante, The Divine Comedy: Paradiso, Canto 31) Angels known as Thrones totally defy human description. They are described by the prophet Ezekiel as having the appearance of great fiery wheels filled with eyes. Thrones are the chariots of God which the Cherubim drive through the never ending universe. How far is never ending? There is no end. This also defies description, except possibly to a poet. Thrones are forever in the presence of God singing His praises. Ezekiel chapter 1 says of Thrones, "...their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward. As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also lhad the face of an eagle. Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies...as for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire, and like the appearance of lamps: it went up and down among the living creatures; and the fire was bright, and out of the fire went forth lightning. And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning." This is a lengthy chapter, describing Thrones as none other can. Reading Ezekiel chapter 1 makes it impossible not to think of flying saucers, and thanks to some authors like von Daniken, rightly or wrongly, this chapter now forms the basis of many myths and tales of science fiction. Parallel universes are replacing the heavens, and alien abduction is now more believable than being escorted to heaven or transported to hell by an angel.
