Pumpkin Fantasies

Pumpkin carving is fun, but let's face it folks--it IS messy, terribly messy, but there is an alternative. Enter pumpkin painting and design...

Why not conjure up the radiant color and nostalgia of the season with three of Dubh Sidhe's pumpkin fantasies? Is it possible that one of these whimsical pumpkins is just waiting for an honored spot on your porch during the month of October? You may reproduce any or all of my three pumpkin fantasies for your pleasure, or indulge your creative ability as you garner dozens of other design ideas from Mother Goose, and folktales. And the best part--well, to some people that is, there is no mess from pumpkin carving.

Cinderella's Wizard Coachman

The first pumpkin fantasy, dubbed Cinderella's Wizard Coachman, is a 3-dimensional wizard constructed from paper cut-outs, construction paper, and cotton. He is put together with Elmer's white glue, and attached to the pumpkin using a hot-glue-gun.

Mr. Wizard, though smiling, is inflicted with laziness, therefore he is much more comfortable driving the pumpkin coach in a prone position. It does look like the mice got away from him though, and where is Cinderella?

Pinnochio

Pinnochio's hair and facial features were painted onto the pumpkin using non-toxic acrylic craft paints. A yellow felt cap, sporting a white feather, sits jauntily on his head. A white collar and blue satin ribbon tie complete his wardrobe. His nose, a wooden dowel, supports a small bird's nest at the end. A tiny cricket sits on the nest admonishing Pinnochio to stop telling fibs.

The Leprachaun

Mr. Leprachaun is ready for Halloween. He is dressed in his favorite top hat, construction paper features and sprigs of horsehair borrowed from the tail of a rocking-horse. His construction paper neck pieces are quite in vogue, especially in Tarry Town.

Ichabod Crane

And speaking of Tarry Town, why not look for one of those unusual albino pumpkins. Simply attach a black top hat and write on its ghostly white face--Ichabod. What a stark surprise for your most discriminating guest. This example was found in a 1999 issue of Home Companion Magazine.

Fairy Coach

This seasonal painting from one of my favorite artists, Mary Engelbreit, would easily serve transfering to a fresh pumpkin. How one dresses the precious little fairy is endless.

Having friends over for dinner on Halloween? Decorate as many pumpkins as needed. Small ones may also be used quite effectively. Present each guest with a decorated pumpkin as they leave.
