the midst of the flames the Knights Templar were called to appear before the tribunal of God. Their bands were found unscorched and intact. Such was the customary bravery of knights.

...And such were the Middle Ages...

The next day, a group of children observed a black dog lying in the smoldering embers. As they goaded it, the spectral dog stood up, and ran away.

"What ever happened to Pelicamonde, Jonathan?" the travelers asked.

"Well, he inherited the manor house and all of the lands which had belonged to Sir Calidore, and there he lived out a very long life, with his faithful black dog."©
