For the Hindu, the apocalypse is a natural cessation of the world in the fourth age, or the Age of Kali, (Kali was the cult name of the Hindu goddess Durga, wife of Siva, goddess of death and destruction. It was to her that the Thugs sacrificed their victims. Her idol is black, and smeared with blood. She had red eyes, four arms, matted hair, huge fang-like teeth and a protruding tongue that drips with blood. She wears a necklace of skulls, ear-rings of corpses and a girdle of serpents) but the central figure in the story is Vishnu who absorbed the world into himself before being born once more. The Age of Kali is a series of apocalypses, each marking the end of a cycle and the beginning of another creation. Some of the events prophesied for the Kali Age are debasement and debauchery of rulers, dishonesty, lying, anger, inflicting death on cows, women, children, the unborn, and the aged. Virtue will be nil. Perversion will be rampant. Pleasure will be the only reason for marriage, water will be scarce, and the earth will parch. There will be suffering from cold, wind, heat and rain and this is a short list. In the end, humankind will be totally destroyed. At the conclusion of a thousand periods of Four Ages the Earth will be wasted. At that time the lord Visnu takes the form of Rudra and destroys all creatures and living things until emptiness shows and the earth is then consumed by a fire. Similar to other millennial visions of the end of the world, the Hopi prophecy also describes destruction and a new world order. Hopi belief envisions their people as living in a world that is wandering and lost in spiritual blackness. Here, the end is ushered in when a kachina removes his mask during a dance.
