Fairy Tale Justice

May 7, 1999 - © Virginia Marin

In fairy tales the reader has the sense that at the root of life there is such a thing as natural justice. This is a powerful theme and adds to the fairy tales' appeal. We know that no matter how evil, how scary, whatever the injustice, the tale can be enjoyed and the reader can rest in a state of non-effect, because he knows in advance how the story will end.

Fairy tales are enjoyed for their excitement. They are filled with monsters and villains that give us goosebumps. Only in the fairy tale can we, the reader, suffer with the heroes and heroines and yet rejoice with their happiness because in the end, fairy tales fill us with wonder - even if the fairies never appear!
