It seems that doctrine and mythology are both necessary. The great thing about mythology is that it can be changed to suit one's purpose. Doctrine is far more intractable. If it becomes too burdensome, do what Christopher Columbus was said to have done when his sailors trembled in fear of falling off the edge; move the goal posts.
