Mandolins and away!

In the last of my ramblings on the subject of folk-music I am taking a look at some of the best web-sites featuring my chosen instrument - the mandolin.

When I first got enmeshed in the web resources for the mando player were scarce, so I decided to set up my own web-site to provide links to "all things mandoliney". Mandolinking (geddit?) is still alive and I will be developing it further over the coming months - please call in and say hello.

One of the first great mando sites I found when constructing mandolinking was Scott Tichenor's Mandolin Cafe. This vibrant site is constantly being updated and provides both news and resources. Some of the goodies are downloadable lessons (including a 4-part series on cross-picking), the most comprehensive contact list of mandolin makers on the internet, images ("eye candy") of classic mandolins and a link to Commando, which is the newsgroup on the mandolin.

The second great site I found was Mandozine. This site has gone through many image changes over the years and now has a very professional feel. Goodies include biographies and interviews with the top mandolin players, essential tunes and technique flash-cards.

The final site in my top 3 has emerged relatively recently. Nigel Gatherer's Scottish Mandolin has a different feel to the two U.S. sites. Its homely construction holds some excellent content. Nigel is a mandolin teacher and his site provided tutorials and an expanding collection of tunes in both standard notation and tablature.

So, if you are new to the mandolin, or a more experienced player looking for ideas, take a look at these sites. All have links to pages which will take you deeper into mando-land. And don't forget to visit mandolinking.

Best wishes, and enjoy your folk-music.

Steve
