For moments of inspiration or ideas, nothing beats listening to or reading about some of the flute greats. Whether you're a college student in need of resources or a player curious about how the pros got their start, there's a wealth of information out in cyberspace. However, I've narrowed this month's article down to just a few sites (and it's still a pretty hefty list!).
The James Galway Flute Page is one of the best sites on one of the best - if not the best - flautists of modern times. This site includes a discography, photo gallery, and biography. Best of all, it contains "The Flute Forum," a great idea exchange for students. Jean-Pierre Rampal (who runs neck-to-neck with Galway as the best) has a nice biography on the TransArt page.. I just wish there was a more extensive page dedicated just to him. Any takers out there? A good page on Ransom Wilson, including a short interview, can be found at The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Included are his thoughts on Rampal, musical preferences, lung capacity, and a list of composers he'd most like to dine with. :-) The Michel Debost Page includes a biography, his past articles from "Flute Talk," and a discussion area. Other pages with performer information and links: Cheryl Boyd-Waddell's biography on Bonita Boyd. Rhodes Music Department biography of Jan Gippo (who just happens to be my teacher). Jim Newsom's page on Herbie Mann. The New England Conservatory has a biography on Paula Robison. For all you Jethro Tull fans (actually, Ian Anderson, who is the flautist. Jethro Tull was actually an eighteenth-century agriculturalist), great leads can be found at the Tullring site. Back at The Rhodes site, a nice link page including the names of 37 performers awaits you! I hope that reading some background on these inspiring performers will get you to the woodshed for some serious Moyse work! In the meantime, in two weeks (June 19), my article will be on "cultural" fluting, including Irish, Native American, and much more! If you have ideas for future articles, please feel free to e-mail me or mention them on my discussions page.
