Hidden Gems, Part I

© Karen Stafford

For the next two weeks, I'd like to highlight some sites from people who may not be super-famous (yet!), but are dedicated to their love of the flute. These hidden gems are homepages of people who have worked hard to bring much information about this instrument to others via the information superhighway.

A description of the first site from the webmaster, in his own words:

With tongue in cheek, Geoffrey Gilbert once said to his flock of disciples, "...now go out and spread the word." In this age of communication what better way to spread the flute word than to enlist the marvels of electronic communication and the Internet.

The Larry Krantz Flute Pages contain a vast amount of useful flute information that is offered free of charge to the global flute community by a variety of outstanding professional players and teachers from around the world. In addition to many pages containing useful flute facts (piccolo and alternate flute fingerings, repertoire, orchestral flute sections, flute makers, stolen flutes list, flute associations, flute books, flute suppliers and publishers, pieces with low B, etc.) it also contains fascinating and educational commentary about flutes and flute playing from Wissam Boustany, Ann Cherry, Robert Dick, Karla Harby, Barbara Hauser, Carolyn Krysl-Hutchinson, Edward Johnson, Larry Krantz, Kathrin Kucharski, Dr. Ed Lacy, Mike MacMahon, Pauline Mancuso, Susan Milan, Alexa Still, Stephen Strauss, Sarah Tuck, Julia Vasquez, Steven A Wicks, John Wion, Joseph S. Wisniewski, Trevor Wye, and John Zornig. The site continues to grow. Addition of new and useful flute material or updates to current pages are made nearly every day. The site gets an average of about 90 visitors each day.

FLUTE e-mail discussion group

FLUTE is an unmoderated mailing list devoted to flute related matters. All topics related to both professional and amateur flute playing are accepted. Flute players, teachers, students, makers, repair technicians, and anyone with an interest in the flute are encouraged to participate. FLUTE is managed by Larry Krantz (list owner - professional fluteist, BC, Canada), Nelson Pardee (list owner - computer programmer at Syracuse University, NY), Helen Spielman (list assistant - flute player, teacher and author, North Carolina), John Rayworth (list monitor - amateur flute player, retired civil engineer and computer manager, England), and David Dahl (FAQ manager - amateur flutist, pianist, choral singer and programmer analyst in Portland, Oregon). Computing & Media Services, Syracuse University generously supplies the computing services to make the FLUTE list a reality. FLUTE membership as of September 6, 1998, numbers 1,552 members from 39 countries. Since FLUTE began in March of 1996 there have been over 31,000 messages about flutes and flute playing shared with the membership.
