Christmas in Brooksville-in March!Located about 40 miles north from Tampa is one of the loveliest cities around. Brooksville is the epitome of "how it use to be" back in the good old days. Brooksville http://www.ci.brooksville.fl.us/ was established in 1856 and today is a popular and well-rounded residential and commerical community. The architecture of the buildings and the layout of the city are like the small town I was born in. Everything is within walking distance; cafes, shops, drug store, court house. You name it and you can probably walk to it without losing a stride. Something I truly do miss in today's modernized stretches of miles of malls! The neighborhoods are reminiscent of my hometown. Huge two story houses and brick streets lined with lovely trees. If you enjoy and admire fine period architecture, be sure to park your car (near the library) and just take a stroll down these quiet streets. I'll share our day with you just so you can have an idea of the kind of relaxing time that can be enjoyed. There are two ways to get to Brooksville from Tampa. The interstate, which isn't that bad and Hwy 41, which is the slow, scenic route. I've taken both but am always partial to the scenic drive. Once we arrived in the city around 9 a.m., we parked near the courthouse on a side street. There were no parking meters. We found the library and proceeded across the street and walked in the quiet old neighborhood. One house was being renovated and we were able to go inside. Fireplaces, hardwood floors, an old staircase and banister and lots of windows were being refurbished. So lovely! We took a walk around the city and checked out the specialty shops for knick-knacks, souvenirs and even tried on western cowboy hats. We peeked in the windows and inhaled the good food smells wafting from the nearby cafes. We did stop for a breather and sat on one of the many benches that line the sidewalks before heading over to Rogers Christmas House-http://www.rogerschristmashouse.com/. If Christmas is one of your favorite holidays, a visit to Roger's is a must! The Christmas complex is comprised of five beautifully decorated turn of the century houses. Each house is filled with every type of ornament and collectible imaginable. There are sitting rooms, dining rooms, bathrooms, and salons all decorated with trees and lights and the fragrance of pine and all good Christmas smells permeate the air. Each house is completely filled with unique items and to reach another house decorated equally as lovely, you will walk through the outside gardens.
