This weekend, we have a lot going on, fun wise, on the west coast of Florida. The first weekend in May proves to be an exciting one for Florida residents and those visiting starting with the Ruskin Tomato and Heritage Festival, Saturday and Sunday at E. G. Simmons Park located in the southwest region of Hillsborough County. If you're not familiar with Florida counties, Hillsborough is the county for Tampa.

If you've never had an opportunity to sample delicious vine ripened Ruskin tomatoes, then spending the day sampling these tasty-tee's should be on your agenda. There will be free sliced tomatoes plus 1000 plants given away each day.

There will also be live music, lots of crafts, and a plant show and a farmers market where you can pick up some fresh produce. The hours for the festival are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Now at one of my most favorite attractions, Lowry Park Zoo, located at 1101 W. Sligh Ave. in Tampa, on Sunday, May 2nd from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., admission will be only $2.00 per person! What a deal and what a way to spend the day at this 40 plus acre world famous zoo. Make plans to stop by and visit the wild life, including the Florida panther, monkeys, wolves, bears, flamingos and Florida manatees!

Saturday and Sunday also has the Tarpon Springs Sponge Festival scheduled which includes the SpongeBob parade, carnival and soapbox derby races. There will also be a huge arts and crafts festival with over 100 vendors, music and plants. Free admission.

Over in St. Petersburg, we have at Derby Lane, located at 10490 Gandy Blvd, free admission all weekend. The Plaza gates will open at 10:30 a.m. Friday and 10:30 a.m. Saturday with the first race from Churchill Downs starting at 11:00 a.m. This is Kentucky Derby weekend, so come on out and enjoy the action.

If you're a flower enthusiast, the Festival of Orchids will be in bloom Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at beautiful Sunken Gardens, located at 1825 4th St. N, in St. Petersburg.

These beautiful gardens, opened in 1935, are situated on 4-acres and feature a lovely butterfly garden, waterfalls and aviary along with magnificent tropical flowers.

These are just a few things you can do this weekend, so put on your shades and soak up some sun and have a great day enjoying Florida Fun!
