Fun at the FairIt's that time again in Plant city, Florida. The annual Strawberry Festival where you can enjoy hours of fun on the midway riding spectacular rides, play endless games of chance trying to win a stuffed animal, sing along with your favorite country stars at nightly performances and stuff yourself with every kind of fair food known to man. And of yes, you top it all off with a huge slice of strawberry shortcake dripping with juicy berries and piled high with mounds of whipped cream. There's also strawberry milkshakes, sundaes and ice cream. Is your mouth watering yet? Plant City is just a hop and a skip from Tampa. Approximately a 30-minute drive so you're close to all the other attractions in Tampa one way or you can head the other way towards Orlando and Mickey Mouse City. The strawberry festival is great fun and if you have the time, you can visit several strawberry farms and pick as many luscious berries as you desire. You'll see fruit stands dotting the back roads with flats of fresh berries for sale. Plant City has become one of the leading agriculture cities in the nation including 5,000 acres dedicated to growing strawberries. The city itself is a small, quaint, step back in time place where you can eat at local diners or experience a great buffet at Buddy Freddy's Restaurant or enjoy the fresh, home cooked meals served at the Branch Ranch. This restaurant has been serving tasty southern cooking since 1956 but if you plan on stopping by, they're closed on Monday and Tuesday. The strawberry festival opened February 26th and runs through March 7th. We just celebrated the 100th anniversary of Gasparilla in Tampa and had our annual pirate invasion. They approached our fair city aboard their pirate ship filled with fierce looking fellas. They maneuvered their way to land, disembarked and met with the Mayor where she promptly turned over the keys to the city. The day was filled with preparations for the Gasparilla parade where the pirates, adorned in their pirate gear, passed out hundreds of beads and coins to the eager crowd of several hundred thousand. The parade wound its way to downtown Tampa where the festivities continued into the night with plenty of musical entertainment. What a day! Following on the heels of the Gasparilla invasion and parade event, the Florida State Fair opens its doors to even more good times.
