A Little Florida Trivia - Just for Fun

I bet you didn't know there was a place called, Holiday, Florida? How about Christmas, Florida? This little city, about 20 miles east of Orlando, has its own place in history.

During the Second Seminole Indian War, a fort was constructed by soldiers and volunteers who had arrived on December 25, 1837. The fort now stands at the Fort Christmas Historical Park.

In Coconut Creek, Florida (east coast near Ft. Lauderdale) you can visit Butterfly World. In this unique environment, you'll be surrounded by thousands of live butterflies and hummingbirds! Open seven days a week.

For an adventure, how about a day at Myakka Wildlife Tours where you can spend the day observing wildlife by airboat or touring the Myakka River State park by tram. Located in Sarasota, tours begin December 16th and run through May.

Birding enthusiasts will enjoy the Matlacha Pass National Wildlife Reserve located in Fort Myers. The reserve has been designated by the state as an Aquatic Preserve. Several islands make up the refuge and are home to migratory ducks, terns, shorebirds, gulls and ospreys.

Cudjoe Key is located at the tip of Florida between Key West and Marathon. The community sits on the Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge, another must see for those interested in this magnificent bird. The refuge offers a critical area for nesting and roosting of over 250 species along with much needed habitat for endangered sea turtles.

Not far from Tampa, is the city of Bushnell where the Dade Battlefield State Park is located. This historic location is where the beginning of the Second Seminole War began on December 28th. Do you like pure spring water? If you answered yes, then Zephryhills is the place for you. Just a short drive from Tampa, the city is world famous for its pure spring water that is gathered from seven of the deepest wells to be found in the state.

Now those of you who travel to Florida frequently know all about Plant City. But for those new to Florida adventures, Plant City is the strawberry capital of the world! More than three-quarters of the strawberries supplied to the U.S. comes from this quaint little city. The strawberry festival held each year starting in February is a tribute to the "berry" and there's always plenty around for some tasty strawberry shortcake.

Sumatra? Yes, we're still in Florida, resides in the Apalachicola National Forest which encompasses 564,000 acres of prime environmental real estate. There are two rivers that run through the forest and there's much to do within the forest including swimming, hiking, camping and boating. The Fort Gadsden Historic site and two designated wilderness areas are also within the parks boundaries.
