Have fun in Florida, but be safe and secure

Thousands of visitors arrive in Florida every day, looking forward to a great vacation. For a few, the experience won’t be so memorable. They may be victims of a crime, a broken law or just a bad case of sunburn.

Thanks to the folks at the Kissimmee-St. Cloud Convention & Visitors Bureau, here are some tips to help sure your Florida vacation is a fun one for all.

COME PREPARED

Casual attire is acceptable at all attractions, dinner theaters and most restaurants, especially in touris areas.

Be sure to include:

-- Comfortable walking shoes.

-- Loose-fitting, lightweight knit and cotton shorts & pants, cotton sweaters and knit shirts are appropriate throughout most of the year.

-- Sun protection -- very important! Hat or visor, loose fitting long-sleeved shirts, closed-toe shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen are highly recommended.

-- A jacket for winter evenings.

-- Lightweight raincoat or poncho for summer showers.

-- Swimsuits for water parks and year-round heated swimming pools.

-- Personal appliances run on 110/115-volt, 60 cycle; international guests may need adapters.

RULES OF THE ROAD

Please keep in mind Florida Law requirements and restrictions:

-- Drivers must carry a valid driver's license and proof of mandatory personal injury (liability) insurance coverage.

-- Front seat passengers of an automobile must wear a seat belt.

-- Children five and under must be in a federally approved restraint device.

-- Children through three years of age must be in a separate carrier or manufacturer-integrated child seat.

-- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can result in fines or arrest.

-- Car headlights must be turned on at dusk; in the rain, headlights must be turned on day or night.

-- Due to Florida's intense heat and high humidity, pets must never be left in cars. Animals are highly susceptible to heat exhaustion, which can be fatal.

SAFETY TIPS IN YOUR CAR

-- Always lock doors and park in a well-lighted area.

-- Keep valuables out of sight and lock wallets, checkbooks, purses, briefcases, cameras and shopping bags, etc., in the trunk.

-- Check your map before you leave. Know where you are going and how to get there.

-- Look in the back seat before getting in your car; look around before getting out of your car.

-- Try to stay on main roads and highways, and never pick up hitchhikers.

-- If you have a car problem, try to get to a service station or populated place.

SAFETY TIPS AT YOUR HOTEL

-- If you are unsure about the safety of any area, ask advice at the front desk.
