Hit-makers from the '60s and '70s will encore the era of the "British invasion," "peace signs" and "love beads" setting the musical tone for the eighth annual Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival with the Flower Power 2001 Concert Series now through June 3.
From the opening night shows featuring The “Happy Together” Turtles through the closing night by Arlo “The City of New Orleans” Guthrie, Flower Power will feature live performances by musicians who took part in capturing an era in song. Among them, the Flower Power acts contributed to 118 Top 40 hits, including 15 No. 1s, according to information supplied by Walt Disney World's public relations department. The 1980s and 1990s also are represented in this year's lineup, by Starship and The Nelsons. But both of those acts have roots deeply within the '60s. Starship "grew" from Jefferson Airplane. The Nelsons are Gunnar and Matthew, the identical twin sons of rock legend Ricky Nelson. A total of 15 acts will take the stage during the six-week Flower Power Concert Series, including such international chart-toppers as Davy Jones, Herman's Hermits with Peter Noone, Paul Revere and The Raiders, and Gary Puckett. Performance times are 4:30, 5:45 and 7:10 p.m. at the American Gardens Theatre. Here's the complete lineup: -- The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie - April 20-22 -- Mitch Ryder - April 23-24-- The Nelsons - April 25-26 -- Davy Jones - April 27-29 -- The Yardbirds - April 30, May 1-3 -- Herman's Hermits with Peter Noone - May 4-6 (May 6 shows: 1:30 & 3 p.m.) -- The Rare Earth, Iron Butterfly, Sugarloaf All Stars - May 7-10 -- The Marshall Tucker Band - May 11-13 -- Badfinger - May 14-15 -- The New Rascals featuring Gene Cornish & Dino Danelly - May 16-17 -- Paul Revere and The Raiders - May 18-20 -- Starship featuring Mickey Thomas - May 21-24 -- Gary Puckett - May 25-28 -- The Buckinghams - May 29-30 -- Arlo Guthrie - May 31, June 1-3. The Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, a six-week outdoor celebration, features colorful gardens, topiaries and spectacular horticultural displays throughout the theme park.
