35. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota announced the opening of the Myakka Canopy Walkway in Mayakka River State Park. The walkway, which is 100 feet long and 25 feet above the ground, will allow researches, school children, visitors and naturalists to examine the subtropical park from a whole new perspective.

36. On the Banks of the Everglades Bed & Breakfast Inn in Everglades City invites guests to enjoy reduced rates for suites. The special is good Sunday through Thursday nights from April 15 until June 1. Guests at the inn can sleep where alligator hunters and rum runners once did their banking. While staying at On the Banks of the Everglades, guests will see many reminders of the inn’s heritage, including a 3,000-pound cannonball safe, money bags and old counting machines.

37. Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa, the 417-room luxury property in Fort Myers, has been awarded the prestigious Mobil Four-Star Award and is listed among the top 1 percent of hotels in North America, of which there are only 19 in Florida.

Southeast Florida

38. The Abbey Hotel in South Beach recently completed a $3 million renovation to its 50 guest rooms, lobby, garden terrace, and restaurant. All guest rooms and suites are fully equipped with Internet access. Guests also can enjoy Mediterranean-inspired cuisine at the Abbey Dining Room.

39. The Albion Hotel in Miami Beach recently opened Paul Devil’s Beauty Bar. The beauty bar features vintage hairdryer chairs, make-up compacts, advertisements and beauty products.

40. The 52-room boutique Claridge Hotel in Miami Beach underwent a $5 million restoration last November. Guests now can experience an in-lobby splash Jacuzzi and Mediterranean/Colonial style décor throughout the rooms and meeting spaces. The hotel also features the Zur Mediterranean Restaurant & Bar, serving New World cuisine.

41. Closed since 1991, The Diplomat Resort in Hallandale Beach is scheduled to reopen January 2002. The 1000-room, 39-story property will feature a 50,000-square-foot hall and adjacent 215,000-square-foot convention center. The Country Club at The Diplomat, which is now open, features 60 rooms and an 18-hole golf course. A European spa opened in October 2000.

42. The $270 million Dolphin Mall at Beacon Tradepost, west of Miami International Airport, is scheduled to open in March with more than 150 shopping, dining, and entertainment venues. The complex will feature an entertainment center with Florida’s largest movie theater, Jeepers!, an indoor amusement park for children 12 and under, and
