The drive out to Key West on the Overseas Highway is one of North America's classic routes. It is an experience you will never forget. The Overseas Highway runs from the mainland south of Miami 126 miles to Key West. The road is U.S. 1 and is two lanes in most parts, so please allow plenty of time. Don't be in a hurry. Stop and soak up the many islands and towns you will pass along the way. And always have a camera at hand. There are 42 bridges connecting more than 100 islands over the 126-mile distance. Three have been named National Historic Sites (old Seven Mile, Bahia Honda and Long Key). In all, 18.8 miles of the highway are on bridges -- 15 percent of the total travel time is spent over water! Here are the bridges of the Overseas Highway (listed are name, mile marker location on the highway and length in feet): Jewfish Draw Bridge, MM 106, 223 feet. Key Largo Cut, MM 103.5, 360 feet.
