KSC Part I: Blast off into space at Kennedy Space Center

Galactic adventures await your family at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, a great place to take the children and a fun, interesting way to spend a day. This is the first part of a two-part visit to Florida's Space Coast. Next week, we'll look at other space-related attractions near KSC and give information about watching a space launch.

The KSC Visitor Complex is one of Florida's top five destinations for tourists. Located on the oceanfront in Titusville, about an hour east of Orlando, Kennedy Space Center has been America's launching point for decades of moon missions, planet observations and now trips to the space station.

The 140,000-acre megaplex includes a replica of a space shuttle, extraordinary IMAX movies that launch you into outer space, a Rocket Garden riddled with satellites and such, and bus tours taking you close to the launch pads.

The Apollo/Saturn V Center brings the U.S. space program's missions to the moon to life through dramatic multimedia shows, hands-on displays and real Apollo flight hardware. You can see a Saturn V rocket, the most powerful ever built. Its shear size - 363 feet in length and 6.2 million pounds in weight - will take your breath away.

On the Space Mirror, a national astronaut memorial designed to honor the 16 astronauts who have given their lives for space exploration, the heroes' names are engraved on a 70,400-pound polished granite surface. It rotates to mirror the movements of the sun, emblazoning the astronauts' memory in the heavens forever.

The bus tours visit the massive launch complexes, which is the only place in the Western Hemisphere where man is launched into space. A highlight of the tour is Launch Complex 39, where on July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 blasted off for man's first landing on the moon.

Allow a full day to see everything at the KSC Visitor Complex. The complex is open every day of the year (except Christmas Day and certain launch days) from 9:00 a.m. to dusk. Special exhibits are often on display.
