Nutrition in Cyberspace

Nutrition in cyberspace? One of the greatest discoveries my husband and I have found on the Internet is getting healthy recipes at the blink of an eye. It keeps us from getting bored when planning healthy meals and answers any questions we may have. It is the next best thing to calling mom for her turkey loaf recipe, except these recipes come complete with nutritional facts such as calorie count, fat intake and cholesterol count.

Like everything else in cyberspace, it can take time to sift through the innumerable sites out there. Therefore, I took the time to look for you.

When it comes to nutrition we tend to get stuck in a rut when we try to eat healthy. Use the Internet to your advantage. There are so many great sites out there that have nutritional tips, calorie counting, recipes on the go and even cooking classes!

  • Note: Always be cautious on web and don't get sucked into any of the crazy diets that may be incorporated into these sites. I don't believe taking a slew of pills or starving yourself will help you to lose weight. The purpose of nutrition is to eat healthy and smart. The point is not to look like Barbie by attaining an unrealistic weight. I never step on a scale, I go by how my clothes fit and how I feel when I look in the mirror. Remember that an integral part of being fit is having self esteem and treating your body well helps to improve a positive body image.
  • What I look for in a good site is one that has several pop-up windows, is easy to access and has some great information regarding nutrition. It always helps if it looks professional, has been around for a while and is pleasing to the eye.

For instance, did you know that the proteins in chicken and eggs can help to banish that light-headed feeling you may get during the day and that leads to a hard time concentrating? Or that foods like milk and yogurt can help to metabolize glucose, which is the brain's number one fuel source. I found these great tips at (http://www.efit.com/). It is a personalized nutrition counseling site entitled Nutricise. There are so many wonderful nutritional tips regarding all aspects of your health including your heart, cholesterol, pregnancy and obesity.

  • There is a great article regarding soy, which has become a personal favorite of mine. It is being toted all over the media for its health benefits and it's a wonderful meat alternative for vegetarians. There are so many different variations of soy now that it is easy to incorporate soy into your diet including soy cheese, butter and nuts.
