Fisher's Footgear Part Twobasis. Several mail order outlets offer quality waders at a bargain price. You can get an idea of quality by turning the wader inside out and examining the foot and crotch seams. All waders should be worn with a waist belt. This is less important with snug neoprenes, but still a good way to reduce the amount of water you take on when you go over the top! One thing is certain, if you wade, you will eventually go over the top. So, in extreme conditions, such as winter steelheading, make sure you are close to spare dry clothing in your car, or tote the makings of a fire and a change. Hypothermia is no joke! SPECIALTY FOOTGEAR If you like to wade "bare" as is commonly done in the South and the tropics, consider "reef runners," a version of a diver's bootie that pulls on and, even in gumbo mud, stays on. It also protects feet against cuts from broken bottles and such. Look for a glued-on outer sole. River runners who paddle barefoot face sunburned and, when they jump out, bone-bruised feet. If you don't like mocs. consider sandals that float even though river runner sandals sold by L.L. bean and others add a Velcro closure ankle strap that secures them in fast water. These are highly recommended for waders who might otherwise go barefoot and risk bone bruises or cuts from unfortunately epidemic broken bottles. They fit over wet suit booties too. So can get belly boaters from the bank to their vehicle. However, wear socks unless you have barefoot tan lines. Fried feet are no fun! If you fish where snakes are a problem, consider snake boots or leggings. The former offer better protection, but are quite stiff and uncomfortable. The latter cost less and seem easy to remove. I have been struck twice by rattlesnakes while wearing old-style boot waders; neither bite came through to the skin. I wonder about neoprenes in this situation. FASHIONABLE FISH FEET A good set of deck shoes if you boat, dress or walking shoes with no-slip soles and comfortable insoles and a pair of light hiking shoes or, if you wade, chest-high waders handle most conditions. Buy the best footgear and socks you can afford, treat them well and your feet will stay comfortable when those less prepared blister or freeze.
