A Paramedic's Poem

© Robert Moyer

I am Sorry if I woke you in the middle of the night,

But someone in my community is fighting for their life.

Sorry if I block the road and make you turn around, But there's been a bad wreck with dying persons strewn across the ground.

When you see me coming you'll have to understand, Lend me the right-of-way - so I can save the day.

Somewhere a child is choking, somewhere a broken leg.

Sometimes a heart stops beating, but when I get there it's far too late.

So if you see me crying when I think I am alone,

You'll know I had a "bad" one and I am feeling mighty down.

I don't do it for the money or any form of gain.

I don't do it for the glory, but for a life that might be saved.

Somewhere deep within us, our souls cry out loud.

I am here to help my neighbors in their hour of need and doubt.

God gave me something special to help see you through,

I do it because I love you, and I care about you too.

This poem reflects on how I feel about the work that I perform, when I am not firefirefighting, repelling off a cliff to save a live or splashing around in a pool of hazardous materials, trying to stop a leaking chemical tank, so the village down wind doesnt lose any lives. I do the work that I do to help other and get a little self fulfillment out of it. I do it because I feel I can make a difference and give someone a little more time with their loved ones. In this line of work helping others and caring for your patients is top priority. Its really hard to write articles with meaning when you have a 400 word minimum and have to ramble on and on and on and on, just to fill the requirement. This only takes away from the true meaning of the article. I apologize for continuing on like this, but it hard to write an article in between calls for help and still study for class, sleep and spend time with the family. Not to mention performing duties at the fire station, hazmat team and train for the next rope rescue call. Im trying my best to keep up with the suite, but who knows maybe Ill be leaving soon. Because as I have said before serving the public is a far greater reward, than writing articles. Who knows maybe a new article will appear soon, maybe it won't.
