What is MTAP?
MTAP is a state grant program created to assist Montana residents who are students attending an eligible Montana school.
What is the Baker Grant?
The Baker Grant is the grant awarded to eligible students. It is named in honor of Dr, Jeffery D. Baker, who was the Commissioner of Higher Education from 1993-1996. Dr. Baker convened the Financial Aid Task Force that recommended the creation of MTAP. Why is MTAP Baker Grant different from other grants?
MTAP Baker Grant is different from other grants because the student must have at least $2500 in earned income from the previous calendar year. It is the goal of the Baker Grant to offset some of the penalties students incur in the financial aid process because they work and earn money. The Baker grant is designed to reward students that are working to help pay for their college costs.
Who is eligible to receive a Baker Grant?
The financial aid office will consider students that apply for federal aid and
meet the federal requirements for financial aid eligibility; are full-time students attending an eligible Montana institution; meet the Montana residency requirements of the Montana University System have $2500* or more from earned income from the prior calendar year; whose expected family contribution under the Pell Grant formula reflects they are from a lower or middle income family; are in an undergraduate program leading to their first undergraduate degree or certificate; and are making satisfactory academic progress. *This figure will be adjusted annually to reflect changes in the federal hourly minimum wage.
Note: Students who have already received an undergraduate baccalaureate degree are not eligible.
How does a student apply for an MTAP grant?
Students are considered for an MTAP grant by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the government's central processing center. Students cannot apply separately with their school. By indicating on the FAFSA the student's school of attendance, the financial aid office will have the information necessary to select the MTAP recipients. Awards are based on the availability of funds. The maximum award is $500.00.
