Kentucky Student Aid Programs

This week I would like to take the opportunity to discuss with you the various financial programs available in the state of Kentucky. You can research all resources and information found here on the home page of the Kentucky regional resources located at http://www.kheaa.state.ky.us/

Following is an excerpt from a press release dated April 12, 1999 addressing more funding for need-based student aid programs run by the state.

Governor Paul E. Patton announced today that more eligible students are receiving state-funded, need-based student financial aid than ever before. Later this week, the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) will begin the annual process of offering College Access Program (CAP) Grants and Kentucky Tuition Grants (KTG) to Kentucky students to help them pay their expenses at eligible Kentucky postsecondary institutions for the coming school year.

Governor Patton says, "We want to encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to get a good education in Kentucky. We're making education more affordable and accessible than ever before, and we urge all students to take the opportunity to establish themselves, and their future in the global marketplace, by continuing the process of lifelong learning."

The 1998 Kentucky General Assembly, at the request of Governor Patton, authorized a substantial increase in appropriations for the state's three need-based financial aid programs during the 1998-2000 biennium. For the 1998-99 academic year, the 48% increase raised the total funding for the CAP, KTG, and Teacher Scholarship programs to $44,770,100, which provided over 43,000 awards to Kentucky students. Additional funding for the coming school year will allow the state to raise awards to keep pace with the increase in tuition at Kentucky's community colleges and ensure the recent growth in number of awards is sustained. KHEAA projects all eligible students who apply in a timely manner will receive grant awards.

Students who have already applied for CAP and KTG grants for this fall and next spring will begin receiving notifications from KHEAA regarding their eligibility this week. As new applicant data is received for students, KHEAA will contintue mailing award notices as well as notifying students who did not meet eligibility requirements or did not provide sufficient information to determine their eligibility. Students are urged to carefully review data contained in the notification and respond immediately to any requests for information.

Students who do not plan to attend the institution listed on the award notice should advise KHEAA as soon as possible by writing to KHEAA Grant Programs, 1050 US 127 South, Frankfort, KY 40601-4323 by August 1, 1999, for the fall sememster or December 1, 1999, for the spring semester. Students may also provide this information by e-mail addressed to mwells@kheaa.com.
