It's hard to believe, for some people that Wal-Mart offers a scholarship worth up to $20,000 for college, but they do. I found this particular site by chance, and I wanted to share it with you.
If you're a high school student interested in a manufacturing, industry and technology-related field, and you're good at it, Competitive Edge could pay for part or all of your college education. Maybe you're good at physics now. Imagine what you could achieve with a college education. You might make a great mechanical engineer! The Competitive Edge Scholarship Fund is set up to make sure that students have all the resources they need to follow their dreams. It pays $5,000 a year toward college education for four years. That $20,000 is worth it to Wal-Mart and Wal-Mart's vendor-partners, because American industry needs sharp minds to compete in the global marketplace. Competitive Edge was initiated in 1992 by Sam Walton, founder of Wal-Mart. Sam knew that the future prosperity of American industry depends on what happens in our classrooms right now. Competitive Edge is designed to ensure that America's best and brightest students become our leaders in manufacturing, industry and technology-related fields. To date, over 1,000 students have received the scholarship. For the 1998-99 school year, 257 more will be chosen at 140 universities nationwide. If you're interested in receiving Competitive Edge, this page will give you detailed instructions on how to apply, along with a list of necessary qualifications. In January of your senior year you can get a Competitive Edge application from your high school guidance counselor or access the application online. Follow the instructions on the application and when complete, send to the participating university of your choice. You must send the form and essay to the contact at the university before March 1, 1999. To qualify for Competitive Edge, you must be a U.S. citizen and an incoming university freshman. The academic qualifications are as follows: 27 or higher on your ACT, or 1100 or higher on your SAT 3.5 or higher grade point average 90% or higher class rank That's not easy stuff, and this scholarship is how all your hard work could pay off. You must also have participated in community service and demonstrated leadership ability. That just means being involved in things outside of school. It could be anything from being captain of the soccer team to working for a local charity. Go To Page: 1 2
