Beauty and Confusion as Only David Lynch Could Do

To the man in the theatre who asked, “Can someone please give me the Cliff’s Notes for that?” I have only this to say: “Haven’t you ever seen a David Lynch film before? He makes nonsensical, violent, art-house pornography.” Which is true, but in a positive way. His films are nonsensical in the same way that human relations and life are. His violence is only the undertone of the despair felt by his characters. This violence is not a gunshot or a fist in the face, it’s the worst violence there could ever be; the torture people bring upon themselves, and the product of an anger that cannot be expressed in a physical fashion. And the pornography? Well, maybe he’s just a pervert. MULHOLLAND DRIVE was at one time a pilot for ABC. Of course they hated it, beauty such as this does not belong on the small screen. But their loss is our gain. Lynch went back and shot additional scenes (such as what is quickly becoming deemed the “hot lesbian sex scene”) and reedited it. He shared the Best Director prize with the Coen Brothers’s at the Sundance Film Festival. And now he brings it to you. So, if you at all have the means, run out and see it. Submerge yourself in MULHOLLAND DRIVE. And if you’re confused, don’t worry, that’s it’s purpose. To confuse us the way life and love do.
