Ah. At last. The summer movie blockbuster season is over giving way to the films that might actually not make me vomit. If you’re anything like me you’re disgusted with Hollywood. THE MUMMY RETURNS, PEARL HARBOR, SCARY MOVIE 2, all films that add up to a year that’s worse than disappointing. But fear not! Here is a list of a few upcoming movies that might redeem my dwindling love for film.
FROM HELL (October 19) Starring Johnny Depp and Heather Graham, Directed by The Hughes Brothers As every comic book fanboy knows this movie is an adaptation of the graphic serial novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell. It’s the story of a Scotland Yard inspector who investigates the Jack the Ripper case and theorizes that there’s a government conspiracy linking the serial killer to the Royal Family. The Hughes Brothers are famous for making gritty urban dramas (DEAD PRESIDENTS, MENACE 2 SOCIETY) and their take on the London underworld where the prostitutes are murdered is stylish and creepy. K-PAX (October 26) Starring Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey Kevin Spacey plays a mental patient who believes he’s from the planet K-Pax. Jeff Bridges is the psychiatrist who begins to believe him. Did I mention Kevin Spacey is in it? Maybe I’m a pushover, but that’s all the convincing I need. THE MAN WHO WASN’T THERE (November 2, limited release) Starring Billy Bob Thorton and Frances McDormand, Directed by the Cohen Brothers This is a period piece about a man who blackmails his wife’s lover. Shot in black and white with a soothing score and an almost mystical direction it’s sure to please any fan of the Cohen Brothers (FARGO, RASING ARIZONA, and BLOOD SIMPLE). SHALLOW HAL (November 9) Starring Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow, Directed by the Farrelly Brothers Even serious types like myself need a good laugh every so often. I think one will come of this one. Jack Black (HIGH FIDELITY) has never had an unfunny moment on screen ever. He plays a man who only dates beautiful women. That is until he’s hypnotized and given the power to see inner beauty. He then falls in love with Gwyneth Paltrow who’s about three hundred pounds overweight. A fat Gwyneth Paltrow? That’s laughable. VANILLA SKY (December 14) Starring Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz, Directed by Cameron Crowe A remake of the foreign film OPEN YOUR EYES it’s the story of a womanizer who is stalked by one of his victims. Cameron Crowe has not made a bad film yet. If you can handle subtitles rent OPEN YOUR EYES and then see VANILLA SKY. If it’s only an eighth as intelligent and suspenseful as it’s foreign predecessor it will rock your world. Go To Page: 1 2
